About the Translator
Onnagata has loved horror films since childhood, when a chance encounter with the 1944 suspense thriller The Uninvited left her with a passionate appreciation for all things spooky. As an adult, Onnagata has studied a wide range of Japanese films – particularly those in the horror genre – seeking connections to traditional visual arts in contemporary cultural products.
An interest in the depiction of women in contemporary Japanese films, paired with an avid enjoyment of action movies, led Onnagata to Kitamura Ryûhei’s Versus in early 2005, but it was the stress of completing an MA thesis that resulted in a rediscovery of the film and its actors in late 2008. The rest is history.
Onnagata has visited numerous parts of the world, including stops in Central America, Europe, Africa, and Asia, and has lived all over the United States (amongst other places). She currently lives somewhere in Middle America.
