The Onstage Greeting of Yamaguchi Yûdai and Itao Itsuji’s “The Bizarre Hole Human” from the Omnibus Film Hole.
Hole, an omnibus film produced by four directors. The guests for the July 17th onstage greeting were director Yamaguchi Yûdai and stars Itao Itsuji, Tak Sakaguchi, and Masumoto Shôichirô.
The protagonist, a dour worker in a scientific research facility (Itao) is one day accidentally saturated by a scientific laser beam; from that time on he gains the ability to travel from one hole to another, becoming a “hole human.” Such is the plot. Originally, the first draft was worked on by director Yamaguchi, Tak Sakaguchi, and Masumoto Shôichirô and finished up by screenwriter Katô Junya. They attempted to make it in the style of Gas Human Part 1 and like the mysterious characters from Toei Company films. With director Yamaguchi’s hope of a “hole human” that has no acquaintances – that is one-of-a-kind – the casting of Itao was realized. Director Yamaguchi was surprised by his incredible affinity with Itao, saying, “When I said just two words, he understood eight.” Itao also commented, “It went so smoothly it was like, ‘is it possible to go this smoothly?’ I didn’t feel like a first-time member.” Beginning with this performance, Itao has gone on to play an important role in director Yamaguchi’s Cromartie High: The Movie as well as participate in the scriptwriting. Additionally, they have decided to produce a long version of “The Bizarre Hole Human” before the end of the year. It is our hope that Yamaguchi Yûdai, who could be called the pioneer of the new baka eiga (idiot film) genre with such works as Battlefield Baseball and Baba Zone, together with Itao Itsuji will be able to show us something even more new.
Hole plays during the late screening at Shibuya Euro Space.
